(CASTELLANO) Mayor of Kingstown me parece una serie magnífica y claramente infravalorada por parte de una parte de la crítica. Entiendo que su oscuridad, su dureza y su visión tan seca del poder y la violencia puedan echar atrás a algunos, pero precisamente ahí está gran parte de su fuerza. No intenta caer simpática ni suavizar su mundo, y por eso impacta tanto. Desde el principio da la sensación de estar mostrando una ciudad podrida desde dentro, donde todo se sostiene a base de pactos, miedo, corrupción y dolor acumulado. Lo mejor es que no depende solo de su violencia ni de su sordidez. Está muy bien escrita, muy bien dirigida y muy bien construida como universo. Los guiones entienden que lo importante no es solo lo que ocurre, sino cómo se relacionan entre sí todos los focos de poder: cárceles, policía, bandas, familias, política local, negocios sucios. La serie tiene esa capacidad de hacerte sentir que toda la ciudad es un organismo enfermo en el que cada movimiento afecta al resto. Ahí es donde recuerda, salvando las distancias, a grandes series como The Wire, Los Soprano o Breaking Bad: no por parecerse de forma directa, sino por la solidez del mundo que crea. Jeremy Renner está inmenso. Sostiene la serie con una mezcla de agotamiento, dureza, inteligencia y fragilidad que hace que Mike McLusky funcione como eje absoluto de todo. Pero lo mejor es que no está solo. El nivel de las interpretaciones en general es altísimo, y eso hace que incluso personajes secundarios o tramas laterales tengan peso de verdad. Aquí no da la sensación de que nadie esté de adorno. Todo el reparto contribuye a esa idea de una comunidad atrapada en una lógica de violencia de la que nadie sale limpio. También me parece una serie potentísima a nivel formal. La dirección tiene pulso, la fotografía está muy cuidada y sabe encontrar belleza fría en medio de un paisaje moral devastado, y la producción y el diseño ayudan muchísimo a construir ese ambiente opresivo. Todo parece vivido, gastado, contaminado. Y la banda sonora es una barbaridad: no solo acompaña, sino que añade inquietud, amenaza y una especie de tristeza constante que se te mete dentro. En muchos momentos da miedo de verdad. Es cierto que no es una serie amable, ni especialmente variada en su tono, ni busca ser brillante de una forma vistosa. Siempre está al borde del abismo y a veces puede parecer excesivamente sombría. Pero para mí esa coherencia es una virtud, no un defecto. No está hecha para gustar a todo el mundo, sino para meterte en una espiral de tensión moral, violencia estructural y personajes condenados a negociar con el infierno cada día. Por eso me parece una maravilla y una de esas series que nadie debería perderse. Puede que no tenga el prestigio automático de otros grandes dramas criminales, pero se lo merece. Tiene actorazos, creación de mundo, dirección, atmósfera y una personalidad muy marcada. No será para todos, pero quien entre en su juego va a encontrar una serie durísima, absorbente y de muchísimo nivel. (ENGLISH) Mayor of Kingstown feels to me like a magnificent series, and one that has clearly been underrated by part of the critical response. I understand that its darkness, its harshness, and its dry view of power and violence can put some people off, but that is also a huge part of its strength. It does not try to be likable or soften its world, and that is exactly why it hits so hard. From the start, it feels as if it is showing a city rotten from the inside, held together by deals, fear, corruption, and accumulated pain. What makes it stand out is that it does not rely only on violence or bleakness. It is very well written, very well directed, and very well built as a world. The scripts understand that what matters is not only what happens, but how all the centers of power relate to one another: prisons, police, gangs, families, local politics, dirty business. The series has that ability to make you feel that the whole city is a diseased organism in which every movement affects everything else. That is where it recalls, in its own way, great shows like The Wire, The Sopranos, or Breaking Bad: not because it copies them directly, but because of the solidity of the world it creates. Jeremy Renner is outstanding. He anchors the series with a mix of exhaustion, toughness, intelligence, and fragility that makes Mike McLusky work as the absolute center of everything. But the best part is that he is not carrying it alone. The overall level of acting is extremely high, and that means even secondary characters and side plots have real weight. Nobody here feels decorative. The whole cast contributes to that sense of a community trapped in a logic of violence that leaves nobody clean. I also think it is a remarkably strong series on a formal level. The direction has real control, the cinematography is carefully crafted and finds cold beauty in the middle of moral devastation, and the production design helps enormously in building that oppressive atmosphere. Everything feels lived-in, worn out, and contaminated. And the score is astonishing: it does not just accompany the action, it adds unease, menace, and a kind of constant sadness that gets under your skin. At many points, it is genuinely frightening. It is true that this is not a warm series, nor an especially varied one in tone, nor one that tries to be flashy in an obvious way. It is always standing at the edge of the abyss, and sometimes it can feel relentlessly bleak. But for me that consistency is a strength, not a weakness. It is not made to please everybody. It is made to pull you into a spiral of moral tension, structural violence, and characters condemned to negotiate with hell every single day. That is why I think it is a remarkable show and one nobody should miss. It may not have the automatic prestige of other major crime dramas, but it deserves it. It has great actors, strong world-building, direction, atmosphere, and a very defined personality. It will not be for everyone, but anyone who enters its world will find a brutal, absorbing, and high-level series.
